What is ‘diet’ culture?

What Is Diet Culture?

Diet culture is a system of beliefs and values that prioritizes body weight, shape, and size over health and well-being.

It’s a way of thinking about body size that assigns a ‘moral virtue’ to some types of bodies (usually smaller) and types of food.

In ‘diet culture, food becomes “good” or “bad” and eating certain kinds  of foods will trigger negative feelings, like guilt and regret.

People want to ‘fix’ body parts (for example muffin top, thigh gap, beach body, bat arms… you get the idea)

Now, food has become the bad guy. Then we find ourselves trying to avoid food and calories.

And exercise then becomes a tool  that is the way to achieve the  body  that we want. Very often, the body type we want to obtain is unrealistic for us.

In short, diet culture main focus is on external goals instead of internal ones, and decisions come from a place of self-control instead of self-care.

And…  we don’t have to be on a named diet like Keto or Paleo to be participating in this culture of dieting.

Some of us have been living in diet culture for so long that we have an internalized diet mentality.

This mentality affects how we think about food, movement, and bodies.

Say NO to the diet culture!!

*Reject the Diet Mentality – Stop putting weight loss and leanness on a pedestal and revolving your life around it.

*Be aware of the language you use – good, bad, clean, naughty, cheating, cheat day, etc.  Also  don’t tell yourself  “I earned that piece of pizza.”

* Educate yourself on what to eat – eat intuitively. By learning to eat intuitively, you will be able to reconnect with hunger and fullness cues, focus on satisfaction, and stop restricting.

*Take care of your relationship with nutrition and exercise, use it as a form  of self-care.  Let food and movement make you feel good instead of guilty, or believing it will lead you to look a certain way.

Lastly, STOP CALLING YOURSELF FAT!!!! YOUR BEAUTIFUL!!!!
